Mirror, mirror on the wall …
Whether we like it or not, we judge everyone else. In a second, we form an opinion about someone we don’t know at all. So it is with the cashier at the supermarket, the new colleague or the hunk you met on Tinder. We believe that we can judge a person’s intelligence or reliability based on their appearance. Sometimes our first impression is completely wrong, but the 7 things below really say a lot about a person’s personality. Good to know !
1 A picture is worth a thousand words
Did you know that people can tell what kind of person they are based on a simple photo? According to a 2009 study, a quick glance at a person can give you an idea of their self-confidence, religiosity, extroversion, attention to detail or adaptability. It really doesn’t take much to get a feel for a person’s personality!
2 To be attractive is to be able?
You’ve probably heard that beautiful people have more redeeming qualities. Psychologists call this the “halo effect”. If someone is good looking, we automatically assume that they are smart or dedicated. They are often better paid and more likely to get promotions. Life is really not fair.
3 Face and leader ship
Did you know that people judge your ability to lead by your height and the length of your face? Tall people with a long face are considered better leaders. This is what a study carried out in 2013 showed. Weird, right?
4 Face and aggressiveness
People can see how aggressive you are based on your facial structure. A broad face with a broad jaw indicates a more aggressive person. This makes sense because this type of face is due to high testosterone levels. Based on your face, people can also judge your strength. People with nicer faces are judged to be weaker, and you would assume that people with angry faces are stronger.
5 Face and crime
According to a British and Israeli study, people who look crazy are more often seen as criminals in general. If you have a mischievous or unreliable gaze, you will often be associated with dark affairs. Research shows that people with unreliable appearances are often punished more severely than those with reliable appearances.
6 Face and health
It’s no surprise to hear that your appearance says a lot about your health. People who smoke will have more wrinkles than non-smokers. And did you know that the number of wrinkles on your face says a lot about your heart? On average, people who have more wrinkles on their face have more fragile hearts, according to a 2012 study. Just looking at a person’s eyes can tell you a lot about their health. Red spots on your eyes could be a sign of diabetes.
7 Body and health
A long study of 4000 men showed that the length of certain fingers could be linked to their risk of prostate cancer. Men whose index finger is as long as the ring finger or whose index finger is longer than the ring finger are 33% more likely to get prostate cancer. Height has also been linked to disease risk. Tall people are less likely to have heart problems, and short people are less likely to get cancer. These findings could be attributed to growth hormones which in some cases reduce the risk of disease and in others increase it.
